First Day of Harvest
Thank you, Gretchen, for the picture of Randy on his "First Day of Harvest photo". Their little girl started kindergarten this year and held a sign so she wanted her Daddy to do the same. It's actually a "thing" on social media now, so check it out.
Was your first day of harvest this week?
You may not be a farmer, but you know one and harvest is the season they look forward to all year. It can also be the most dangerous time of the year with early mornings starting before the sun rises and late nights in the field.
Combines and tractors are out on the country roads so PLEASE be careful. They are wide and cannot move over to the ditches as quickly. PLEASE tell your kids to be careful and drive slow when going over the hills. Look ahead over the next hill and ridge.
Watch for "alien lights" on the highways, flashing lights usually means a "lead pickup" is escorting a large piece of equipment. I will be sharing photos of harvest in the coming weeks, feel free to share your own by sending them to firstname.lastname@example.org
Elmwood Hosted the Harvest Moon Road Race
This 4th Annual race is described as the following...
"Fast. Flat. And in the dark! The unique setting of a full Harvest Moon, coupled with a night time trail run on the Mopac Trail & after party has made this a ‘must run’ event for Nebraska runners each fall and sells out quickly. "
This 10K race brings people from all over Nebraska and Iowa to Elmwood. Over 1000 runners participated with the fastest time of 33:25. But it's not just for the pros, some people walk/jogged to just say they DID IT!!! They took a little over two hours to complete the course. I want to be with them!! I bet the conversation was wonderful.
Thank you to the volunteers who helped at the Elmwood Fire Hall. A nice donation was made to the Fire Hall and the Elmwood Park.
Many nice things were said about the park and people commented they would be coming back to town and bringing their kids to enjoy the playground.
Elmwood Farmers Market
Speaking of people visiting from out of state, this couple stopped by the farmers market on their way back to Minneapolis. She is from Germany and they met in Thailand where he was teaching English to 2nd graders.
They were so interesting! Elmwood was their last stop in an eight-week journey across the United States that took them through the Badlands, Yellowstone, Montana, California, the Grand Canyon, and Colorado before stopping to "Couch Surf" in Elmwood.
She enjoyed a breakfast of hot lemongrass tea and a biscotti at the farmers market and deemed it the "BEST BREAKFAST" of their journey. They were very pleasantly surprised to find unique and delicious food.
This is why I set up a table every Saturday morning, you never know who you will meet and the stories you will hear.
The first true Elmwood Farmers market is about to wind down. Only 2 more weeks left to pick up jalapenos, jams, jellies, baked goods and herbal teas.
West Nile Warning
Two local Elmwood residents have been hospitalized recently for West Nile.
This is no joke!
Mosquitoes are out and it's important to use insect repellent. Symptoms include a high fever, a very severe headache, and stiffness. It may feel like a very bad flu, but WORSE. Both people were in the hospital for a week, so it is a major illness. It can cause encephalitis or meningitis.
One person I spoke to it's something he never wants again and he is still feeling very weak.
Pumpkins are back at the Oerhlerking Farm
Don't forget to stop by the pumpkin patch at the Oerlerking Farm on Highway 34. There are no "official hours". Just stop by, take a picture by the tractors or wagons or tractors and leave payment in the can.
The kids can even play in the corn pit.
Plan to attend the Fall Quilt and Barn Quilt Show at the Bess Streeter Aldrich House
Over 70 quilted pieces are inside and you just can't appreciate them until you visit. The quilt show theme is fall and Halloween and the creativity of the Oxbow Quilters is simply amazing!!
This is in addition to the wooden quilt squares outside in the garden. It's looking like a beautiful fall week so head on over and check it out.
Would you like a Barn Quilt for your home or Garden??
You can bid on the wooden barn quilts displayed outside and visit the Bess Streeter Aldrich page and see the "live auction" and the current bid.

If you live in Murdock you can probably hear them practicing as they march down the streets during the first period. Oh, how I miss my kids in marching band. It was one of my best memories of their school experience. Yes, I was THAT band Mom.

Work on N-63 Alvo North Realignment
March 15, 2018 (Lincoln, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work is scheduled to continue the week of March 19 on N-63, between Alvo and I-80, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Knife River, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa has the $11,758,926 contract. Work will include realignment of N‑63, culverts and box culverts, and wetland mitigation. This will be the second of two phases of work.
During this phase, N-63 will be closed to traffic from Reference Post 4+20 (Alvo) to Reference Post 9+68 (Church Road). A marked detour will be in place along I-80 to N-66 to N-50 to US-34 for southbound traffic and along US-34 to N-50 to N-66 to I-80 for northbound traffic. This portion of the project is anticipated to be completed in November 2018.
The Department’s project manager is Jesse De Los Santos of Lincoln. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through work zones and along detours.
