The theme for this year's Holiday Extravaganza, "The Silent Stars Go By"

The theme is taken from a story in Bess Streeter Aldrich's "Journey into Christmas and Other Stories." In this collection of short stories, the true meaning of Christmas emerges about reunited families, good fellowship, and restored faith. The book is available at the Elmwood Public Library. The last of the woodchips was spread on Saturday and the orange fencing came down. So many people helped make this project a reality. Julie Anderson for her vision and spearheading the project over the past two years which included hundreds of hours of her time.

I have heard Julie being referred to as the Park Manager, and Vince as the Assistant Park Manager, and what do they get paid for these "positions" Nothing. Yet, Julie is down there refilling the toilet paper and cleaning the bathrooms.

IF you see  Lou Allgayer and Eugenia Bornemeier around town, THANK THEM!! There were there EVERY work day, all day!  They are a prime example that youth has nothing over age. They were workers. I had a hard time keeping up with them.

Family Reading Night

FamilyReadingNight 112017 10Nebraska turned 150 years old this year and Elmwood-Murdock students celebrated this event on Family Reading Night, November 13. We chose to celebrate by doing things children in pioneer days would have experienced. The evening began with everyone singing Happy Birthday to Nebraska.

FamilyReadingNight 112017 2

There were three different areas where children heard stories and played games. Mickie and Rick Clements shared pioneer life through the eyes of Laura Ingalls. Riley Wilson and Jacie Fleischman read a book titled "Winter Days in the Big Woods." Children learned how to play marbles and how to operate a whirligig.

Another group heard the book "Papa and the Pioneer Quilt" read by Madie Justesen and Jordan Vogler. Everyone designed a quilt block for a school quilt. A third area was in the gym where everyone could play games from long ago.

The choices were "Drop the Hanky", "London Bridge", hopscotch, jacks, clothespin drop, jump rope with old fashion jingles, stick pull and pick up sticks. Children could also experience how the pioneers would have washed clothes.

FCCLA helped with this event. They made the Nebraska cupcakes for the birthday party. A book exchange was also held.

image003 2Meet baby Clara – named in honor of the founder of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton, and in recognition of the blood donors that helped save her father's life. Clara is the daughter of Brian Boyle, who nearly died in a car accident at the age of 18. He received 36 blood transfusions and 13 plasma treatments.

Following a long three-year recovery, Brian wanted to somehow pay it forward and became a Red Cross volunteer and blood donation ambassador. He’s volunteered more than 4,000 hours of service in support of the Red Cross mission.

This past February Brian became a Red Cross employee. He recalled, “The day before my first day of work I found out that my wife and I were having our first child, a daughter.”
Brian’s story has come full circle. "Getting married and seeing my daughter born would not have been able to happen without the love from my parents, support from many care providers and the blood from dozens of generous Red Cross blood donors who helped save my life.

Their blood gave me back my life, and it allowed me to give life."

Elmwood Village Board Special Election

Meet the Candidates: Over the course of the next three weeks, I will post information about each candidate running for the Elmwood Village Board. Additional candidates are welcome to submit their information to the Elmwood News by emailing me at editor@elmwoodnebraska.com

Kathy (Taylor) Goerlitz

I was born in New York City and lived in Manhattan until I was 16. My family moved upstate to Monroe, NY, located in Orange County, which is about an hour North of the city. I have been married twice and have two sons; Curt Taylor of Harriman, NY and Charles Taylor of Denver, CO. I have four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The first phase of my professional career was spent at Frontier Communications in Monroe, NY. After 22 years, I retired and moved to Maine where my husband and I owned a summer home. We purchased a home and lived in Dexter, Maine, about 8 miles from our summer place. The second phase of my professional career was spent working for Wal-Mart in Palmyra, Maine. I worked there for 17 years before retiring again.

My years of public service began in Monroe, NY, when I joined the Monroe Volunteer Ambulance Corps. I am a lifetime member and have served for nearly 51 years, 28 of which were in active service. I responded to over 2,500 calls during my active tenure. I led the organization as Chief Dispatcher and then later Vice President and President.

I further served my community on the Mombasha Fire Company, also in Monroe, NY, as the Treasurer, Vice President, and President. I earned lifetime membership from this organization as well, and my active tenure was 32 years.

While living in Maine, my husband and I were active members of the Kiwanis Club. I served the Town of Dexter on the planning board for many years, as well. I ran for and was elected to the Mayo Regional Hospital board in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. I served on this board for 10 years.

My husband passed away in Maine in 2010. In 2015, I decided to sell my property in Maine and move to Nebraska. I arrived in July of 2016 and moved in with my sister, Maggie Smith. I lived with her until recently, when I moved into the apartments on Main St. In Nebraska, I am closer to my son and grandchildren in Denver. I enjoy spending time with my niece, Allison Meister, and her family.

I look forward to serving the community of Elmwood if given the opportunity to serve on its board. I bring a wealth of experience in public service and can help lead the board into the future.
