Fall in Elmwood
I hope everyone is took advantage of the nice fall weather this past weekend. It was perfect weather and I saw a lot of people riding bikes and in the park. I even took the dogs out on the trail this past weekend. It reminded me of the local treasure we have right in our backyard.
Local Elmwood- Murdock Mission to Ukraine
Many people may have known that Col. Tom Brewer traveled to Ukraine this past summer. But many people may not know that Noah Philson, a resident of Elmwood and 2014 Elmwood-Murdock graduate, was right next to him organizing travel plans, logistics, and supplies. Noah had actually been there since December 2021 on his own personal mission trip.
The Philson family first went to Ukraine five years in the Fall of 2017. They returned in January with all of the boys except Micah for their winter English/bible camp called Crosswinds. Several of them returned the next year. Noah has been every year since to their friends' church in Boyarka called Light of Life Church.
Noah and Josiah left on Christmas Eve last year. Josiah returned to Nebraska in January 2022. But Noah remained to start organizing a missionary outreach at a small community cafe called Replace, in Boyarka. Noah was "boots on the ground", helping them get organized and keeping us informed of the progress.
That, unfortunately, was sidelined by the war. Little did he know that February 24th would change his mission. The rumor of a Russian invasion had been circulating off and on for years. Even when Noah left Nebraska in December of 2021 there was talk of invasion. I remember asking Beth if he was still leaving for Europe.
But nothing happened. Even the week of the Russian invasion the residents of Boyarka doubted it would happen. But soon Noah found himself driving refuges to the Polish border. He then spent the following spring months driving refugees from the Ukrainian border to points through Europe including Romania, Poland, Belarus, Germany, and Moldova.
Noah also worked with a camp in Poland called Proem. They did open up again recently, on a limited basis, but their Instagram is still pre-invasion. There is no way of donating yet, but they are working on a website.
Col. Tom Brewer 2022 Summer Trip to Ukraine
During the summer of 2022, The Philsons helped Tom connect with a translator and local driver. Noah took the responsibility of logistics, housing, supplies, and food so Col. Brewer could concentrate on the mission of meeting with government officials, hospitals, and organizations. It was a mission of information, to learn what the people of Ukraine needed and how could the people of the United States help the most.

October Ukraine Mission
Tom Brewer is now back in Ukraine on another mission. The details of the mission are general for security reasons. But Noah met Tom in Poland this week and next week will be PART 2
For now you can watch and read the various media releases on the expectations.

Elmwood Library Working to Improve Access
The Elmwood Library has identified a need in the community and is working to fulfill it. With an increased number of patrons in the community with mobility issues, the library board has decided to install an automated handicap door. Library Director Anne Pope said, “Currently if someone needs assistance to get into the library, they have to get the attention of a staff member to help hold the door. If we’re working in the back, or helping someone on a computer, employees might not immediately see that person needing help at the entrance. It makes us feel terrible to think that those persons have just as much right to utilize a public space, but are dependent upon us to do so.”
The library has already received some generous donations to the project. Elmwood’s St. Paul’s Methodist Church, the CWF at the Elmwood Christian Church, and the local Vacation Bible School kids have given money towards fulfilling the library’s goal of $6,000. There’s even a collection jar at the Bits and Pieces thrift store in town. Staff are waiting to hear the results of some grant applications for funding, and estimate that they are roughly halfway towards their goal.
“The monetary gifts that we’ve received so far were completely unsolicited,” said Mrs. Pope. “These groups heard we were working to make their library more accessible to people who have special needs. They came up to me and asked, ‘How can we help?’ It’s been amazing!”
If you or your organization would like to contribute to the project, the Elmwood Public Library is accepting donations. They can be reached at 402-994-4125 or by email at elmwoodlibrary@outlook.com. They the new doors can be installed this fall.

Village Board Meeting
Board meetings are open to the public and are held every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month.
The meetings are held at the new Village Board office located at the Learning Center on the south side of town.
Official agendas are posted the day before at the Post Office, Gas Station, and Village Office. Prior to the posting of the agenda, meeting items can be added to the meeting. At the end of each meeting is a Public Comment Section. Attendees have three minutes to speak about anything at this time. Further discussion on the topic can then be added to the next board meeting.
The agenda is posted at the Elmwood C-Store, the post office, and the Village office.
Minutes can be viewed at the Village office or can be found online.
Wouldn't it be amazing if the board meetings were FULL every time? This is your opportunity to be involved, be "in the know" and learn how to influence how your community grows, how improvements can be made, and how you can participate in the steps needed to MAKE IT HAPPEN.
