Graduation at Elmwood Murdock
Congratulations to the 2010 Graduates!
Staci Ronhovde and Griffin Hovorka spoke at the graduation ceremony. Staci spoke of the many fun times they had in high school. She reminded her classmates of the laughs, the inside jokes, and the memories. Griffin spoke of the challenges that lie ahead. They were entering the adult world with a bad economy, war, and conflict. Then he thanked the adults for giving them that. He told us that the world was like a grapefruit but didn't explain why. He wasn't sure either. I think I know though. Add lots of sugar and the world isn't so hard to take. Both Griffin and Staci talked about their most favorite memory from high school...Mr. Schmale's class. That memory made all the students laugh. If you've never had Mr. Schmale's class you are missing out!

Stacey Dorr has been a hair stylist for 6 1/2 years. She lives right outside of Elmwood. (East on D Street, also known as Adams, then 1/4 mile south.) I went to her to get my hair colored. At first I wasn't sure about the color because it was a drastic change. But now I love it!! Stacey is really nice and does a great job. Stacey does cuts, color, highlights, perms, and waxing. She also has a tanning bed.

Dean and Judy Douglas's Iris Garden is Open!

The Iris Patch is located at 28617 Fletcher Avenue, Rural Elmwood

The Iris Patch
The Iris Patch is hosting its 13th annual open house. Dean and Judy Douglas moved to this 2 acre spot in 1972. At that time there were purple and yellow iris already planted. After a visit to the Schliefert's Iris Garden in 1990 they planted their first tall bearded iris and thus began the Iris Patch.
They have replanted the Dykes last year and they appear to have made it through the winter. The blooms will be variable this year. Due to the heavy snow cover last winter followed by the warm days in April the blooms are about 10 days ahead of schedule. The garden is beautiful and each iris is labeled so you know what it is called in case you would like to order one.
Take time for a tour of the Iris Patch. It is worth the time. The iris are starting to bloom now and I plan to go back in another week or so to see even more.
Directions from Elmwood:
2 miles north of Elmwood on Highway 1 - then 1 mile west on Fletcher Avenue. The Iris Patch is on the southwest corner. Just follow the signs!

Mumford Awarded Lofte Scholarship

The Lofte Community Theatre is proud to announce that its 2010 Scholarship for graduating seniors has been awarded to Ross Mumford of Elmwood. His parents are Cindy and Tony Mumford.
Mr. Mumford is not only a Lofte volunteer, but has an excellent record for his high school extracurricular activities as well. He's active in speech, choir, Spanish Club and the Elmwood-Murdock FBLA. During his academic career, Mumford has been a three-year All-State member, a two-year National FBLA competitor and received the Nebraska Young Artist Award. His future plans include attending Nebraska Wesleyan and majoring in music education.
Mumford debuted on the Lofte stage at the tender age of 11. He was cast in his first play, "Damn Yankees" in 2003 and got to utter the memorable line, "Say it ain't so, Joe!" He's also starred in "Laughing Stock," last year's musical, "Crazy For You," and many others. What keeps Ross coming back to the Lofte year after year? "The people and the positive experience that the Lofte continually supplies. The Lofte has also helped me improve my singing, acting and overall performance skills. I'm also lucky to have made so many good friends and special memories during my time here."
The Lofte extends its most heartfelt congratulations to Ross and his pursuit of higher education. Lofte President, Anne Pope said, "Ross' selfless dedication to the Lofte and outstanding academic performance were just two of the reasons that he was chosen to receive the 2010 Lofte Scholarship. While we all hope that he continues to grace our stage with his contagious smile and quick wit, and we also wish him the best of luck on a brilliant future.
