2011 Veterans Day Message
Elmwood American Legion Post 247
As we commemorate Veterans Day this year – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - our hearts are filled with the feelings of thankfulness and respect as we are reminded of the purpose of this day – a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. We again have an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of dedication and valor as well as the selfless service of all American military members. Through their service and sacrifice, and in many cases blood and their lives, in times of war and peace alike, they have served with courage and distinction in the face of tremendous adversity and given us the opportunity to live in the greatest nation on earth.
Fewer than 10 percent of Americans can claim the title of “veteran.” For them there is a special bond, unlike any other kind bond, no matter when or where they served. For the most part, 99.9% of them will tell you that nothing they have done will ever eclipse their military service – regardless of how many decades have passed and subsequent achievements reached. Our men and women in uniform are bearers of a proud military tradition and we remember them all - warriors past and present – and express our deepest gratitude for the many sacrifices they have made and are continuing to make each and every day. There will be reminders all around us today – ceremonies at the school, flags flying in yards and at the cemetery as you head north out of Elmwood, speeches by government officials on television – reminders for us to pause, remember, and be grateful. In reality, we can all honor and show support by simply saying “thank you” to the next veteran we meet.
God bless our veterans and current military members and God bless the United States of America.

PRAY FOR CHANGE
Miss Taylor Kupke is a freshman at Elmwood Murdock. She decided that she wanted to make a difference and do something she is passionate about...helping people. So she started Pray for Change. This is an organization that collects clothing and distributes it to people in need. The Elmwood Murdock FCCLA and Trinity Lutheran Church is helping Taylor. She has also enlisted the help of Lamarr Womble. Lamarr first came to Elmwood Murdock a few years ago as a motivational speaker. And boy, has he motivated! Lamarr is an admissions counselor at UNO by day and a motivational speaker all the time. His organization is called Passion 4 Leadership, or P4L for short.
P4L's mission is to deliver a message that empowers students to develop and prepare personally and professionally to live and lead with passion by keeping reality and the future in mind through workshops and motivational communications. Lamarr keeps in touch with the kids via facebook and he encourages Taylor in her dream.
If you would like to help Taylor please contact her through email, tjak97@yahoo.com If you would like more information about P4L's mission check out the website at www.passionforleadership.org.

This is the first box of clothes Taylor collected...from her own closet.

While you are Praying for Change for Taylor's project say a prayer for change for me, too. Shannon Josoff at Josoff's Fitness Center has finally talked me into joining the gym. She's had it open for a year now and I think about it a lot. Apparently I've run out of excuses or I'm just at a weak point but I agreed. I'm excited to work out at the gym and started on Monday. I tried all the treadmills, the elliptical, and the rowing machine for 5 minutes each. But there are three treadmills so that is 15 minutes! I know that is a slow start but at least it is a start. I really liked the rowing machine and Shannon warned me that it works all of your muscles so it is a great work out. I'm sure since I liked it that I must be doing it wrong. Next I'm going to shoot for 10 minutes! Shannon has two televisions on the wall in front of the treadmills so that helps to pass the time. I couldn't do it if I were just staring at the wall. She's going to show me how to use the weight machines next. I'll keep you updated on my progress. I want to lose weight but more importantly I want to feel good so I'm going to rate my progress on how good I feel and how good I feel about myself. I'll use a scale of 1 to 100. At the beginning of this journey I'm feeling like a 4. Prior to joining the gym I was at a 1 so already I'm making progress. There is not place to go but up!
If you have a favorite work out or advice for me let me know! I love to hear about other people's progress.

Local celebrities! Jordyn, Shay, Draven, and Brooke Campbell were in the right place at the right time and got to see the Oscar Mayer mobile!

If you have something for the newsletter please send to me! It would be great to have it before Monday so I can incorporate it into the next newsletter. My email address is editor@elmwoodnebraska.com.
