Tails and Tales (Summer Reading Program)

Lions and tigers and bears and . . . KIDS! The Elmwood Public Library will be hosting the Summer Reading Clubs during the month of June and this year’s theme is “Tails and Tales” (animal literature)!

The clubs will meet on Thursdays during the month of June (3, 10, 17 & 24). Little ones aged 4-7 will meet at 10:30 am. Older kids ages 8-11 will meet at 1 pm. Each session will last approximately one hour. Parental supervision is not required, as we will have some volunteer coordinators on-site to help.

Library summer reading program

We have a lot of fun things in store including presentations and live animals on-site! We’ll also get our hands dirty with some crafts and kick back with some animal crackers and watch a cartoon or two! Between all of these fun activities, we’ll discover some great animal stories and integrate them into the weekly activities. Earn tickets towards prizes by reading books and attending our meetings. Prizes will be awarded on June 24.

Advanced registration is required. Please stop by the library prior to May 31 to fill out a registration sheet and reserve a spot for your child(ren). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Library Director Anne Pope at elmwoodlibrary@outlook.com.

The Elmwood Library is open. Regular hours with just a few adjustments for social distancing.

Updates from the Legislature merged

Senator Rob Clements Update 5-14-2021

The 2021 Legislative session is about over, and I want to describe a few more bills of interest.

Casino Gaming – LB 561 implements the rules for casino gaming passed by voters in 2020. The State Racing and Gaming Commission will be the regulator. The legal age for gaming is 21, and the age for horse racing wagers increases from 19 to 21. Wagers on sporting events may be placed at racetracks, but no betting is allowed on high school sports, youth sports, or Nebraska college teams when they are playing in Nebraska. It allows casinos to offer keno games under the same rules as at other keno locations. It prohibits the use of credit cards to place bets. The penalty for manipulating a game of chance is $1,000 and one year in jail. LB 561 advanced to the final round with a 39-3 vote.

Tax Policy - LB 432 reduces the top corporate income tax rate over the next four years from 7.81 to 6.84 percent. This will match the rate used for S-Corporations, LLCs, and individuals. We will still be above the rate of most neighboring states. LB 432 also creates a $2,000 one-time income tax credit for the parent of a child that is stillborn after the 20th week of gestation. This makes up for the loss of the child tax credit and helps with funeral and medical bills.

Social Security - LB 64 begins phasing out the income tax on Social Security benefits starting in 2021. The reduction is 5% in 2021, 20% in 2022, and increasing 10% yearly to 100% in 2030. This will help us be competitive with many other states that do not tax Social Security income and keep retirees in Nebraska.

Gun bill – LB 236 would have allowed counties to authorize permitless concealed carry within the county for those legally able to possess a firearm. An Attorney General's opinion determined that the bill may be unconstitutional as written. The county option was removed, and three other provisions were added. LB 236 now provides concealed handgun permit holders with a renewal reminder before expiration and adds a 30-day grace period to renew the permit after it expires. It also clarifies what is considered a concealed weapon, after a Nebraska court case created uncertainty. A firearm carried out of a store in the original packaging will not be considered a concealed weapon.

Feel free to contact me or my staff for assistance, information, or questions on issues.

You may reach me at: Senator Robert Clements, State Capitol Room 1120, Lincoln, NE 68509.

Remember when we said that the Farmers Market was going to officially open the first weekend of June?

Well, we got a head start, but it has been wonderful. After COVID-19 people were wanting to get out. Both Omaha and Lincoln started their markets May 1st and so that is what our customers expected.

Last Saturday drizzly and a little rain, but we had nine vendors and still people didn't want to miss the freshly baked goodies and vegetables.

Bike Share in Elmwood Nebraska

bike share elmwood ne 042021

In coordination with St Paul Methodist Church, United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas, and Bits & Pieces five bicycles are available to check out (just like a library book) and ride around town, to the park, or on the trail.

  • To check out a bike, you must sign a waiver. General bike share program rules-
must show a drivers license at check out
  • 12-17 can rent bikes with a parent at check out. Parents take full responsibility and sign a waiver for their child.
  • The bike is due back by the next Bits and Pieces business day. Plans are in the works to get a key dropbox. (Stay tuned.)
  • The condition of the bike is checked at check out and when it is checked back in
when you check out a bike you are responsible for the bike. Any damage will result in a fee.
failure to return the bike by the due date will result in the suspension of your ability to check out bikes.
  • No holds/reservations on bikes will be allowed
  • We do not provide helmets. You can bring your own helmet to use while riding the bike.
  • Have fun!!!!

Funding for this project was provided in part by the United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas.💗 About 30 people attended the official ribbon cutting on April 12th and I was even the first person to check out a bike. It's easy and once you are registered you just add the next date and time to the notebook.

The Bess Streeter Aldrich House started its new summer (extended hours) today.

We can also schedule a private tour on different days for groups of five or more.

bess street wedding exhibit 2021

This 1925 flapper-style wedding dress gets front room attention because it, like the Aldrich House, is about to celebrate it's 100th birthday. This dress belonged to Mim Custard's mother (Mildred Hoffman who married Ray) on August 26, 1925, in Chambers, Nebraska.

Our wedding exhibit goes through August 29. Are you responsible for planning a bridal shower? Why not consider hosting it at the Aldrich House which is already beautifully decorated. Check out some of the more than 20 dresses on display (as early as 1867)!

The Bess Streeter Aldrich House is pleased to host Dottie Wolverton who will give a presentation entitled “Tied to My Apron Strings” on Friday, June 4, at 1:30 p.m. Considered essential kitchen apparel, the look, and functionality of the apron has changed over the decades. Dottie will bring many of her extensive collections to show.

Did you know that the initial concept of this online town newsletter more than 15 years ago was supposed to be based around READER SUBMISSIONS!
Yup, that's right. Back then it was harder to send in news. NOW, you can just email me news and photos to editor@elmwoodnebraska.com It's that simple.
Remember not everyone has Facebook. Really they aren't.
Even if they are subscribed to the local Stay in the Elmwood-Murdock Group, Facebook does not show ALL the content and you might miss out. VOLUNTEER BUTTON BITSb.pub
