New Book for the Elmwood- Murdock Book club for June. This is a book I can get into, I love historical fiction.

Tails and Tales (Summer Reading Program)
Lions and tigers and bears and . . . KIDS! The Elmwood Public Library will be hosting the Summer Reading Clubs during the month of June and this year’s theme is “Tails and Tales” (animal literature)!
The clubs will meet on Thursdays during the month of June (3, 10, 17 & 24). Little ones aged 4-7 will meet at 10:30 am. Older kids ages 8-11 will meet at 1 pm. Each session will last approximately one hour. Parental supervision is not required, as we will have some volunteer coordinators on-site to help.

We have a lot of fun things in store including presentations and live animals on-site! We’ll also get our hands dirty with some crafts and kick back with some animal crackers and watch a cartoon or two! Between all of these fun activities, we’ll discover some great animal stories and integrate them into the weekly activities. Earn tickets towards prizes by reading books and attending our meetings. Prizes will be awarded on June 24.
Advanced registration is required. Please stop by the library prior to May 31 to fill out a registration sheet and reserve a spot for your child(ren). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Library Director Anne Pope at elmwoodlibrary@outlook.com.
The Elmwood Library is open. Regular hours with just a few adjustments for social distancing.

The Geodome Update
Remember the Geodome that was at the Elmwood park? It was temporarily removed to make way for the new playground equipment. But it wasn't forgotten. We knew the kids loved this and just needed a place to call home.

The GEO Dome was moved to its new home at Baseball Park on Tuesday by the village & Nebraska Digging.
Certified wood chips/mulch was applied to both the dome & the playground equipment at Bess Streeter Aldrich Park.

The kids can now enjoy hanging upside down and practice being monkeys once again.

Elmwood "Pie Ride" Bike Ride
The first PIE Ride was a roaring success. Over 80 pieces of pie flew off the tables in less than two hours. and the Quonset was very busy with cyclists.

Memorial Day
On behalf of the entire American Legion Post 247 family, our Legionnaires, Auxiliary ladies, and Sons of the Legion (S.A.L) thank you to everyone who came out for the Memorial Day Services at the Elmwood Cemetery this year.
It was an honor to have Dwight Clements present to raise the flag to help commemorate his 75th continuous year as a Legion member of Post 247.

He was assisted by his sons Greg, Rick, and Rob, who are all members of the S.A.L. Dwight celebrated his 101st birthday this year, as is Post 247 – chartered in 1920.

A special thank you to our participants: Rev. Dr. James McReynolds for his very touching and meaningful Invocation and Benediction; Odin Janssen, age 8, who made a return appearance to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance; guest speaker, Mike Reimers from Central City, for his words expressing the true meaning of Memorial Day. Mike is a former American Legion Department Commander for the State of Nebraska; Rylee Hogue, a recent E-M graduate and 2020 Girls State Selectee, who once again shared her vocal talents; Bailey Frahm, 2021 Girls State Selectee, who read the traditional General Logan’s Order No. 11; Gus Pope, another recent E-M graduate and the 2020 Boys State Selectee. Gus read the Gettysburg Address.

Three members of Post 247, Boyd Clements, Gordon Lannin, and Robert “Bob” Chapman, who had passed away since our last service was transferred to Post Everlasting, a Legion tradition, with certificates presented to family members.
Brent Hardin, Plattsmouth Journal, once again did a great article for the paper covering our event. You can see it and pictures at the Plattsmouth Journal Facebook page:
We are proud to carry on this tradition started by the Civil War Veterans who settled this area in the late 1880s. See you next year – Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2022.

Senator Rob Clements Update 6-7-2021
The Nebraska Legislature adjourned the 2021 Session early on May 27. A call for a special session this fall will take place to address redistricting, which could not be done during the regular session due to the delay of the federal government getting the information out to the states. Again, I would like to update you on other legislation that passed this session.
A bill dealing with rural broadband availability, LB 388, passed with a unanimous 49-0 vote. It creates the Nebraska Broadband Bridge Act, providing $40 million dollars over the next two years to fund grants to unserved and underserved areas around the state to improve high-speed broadband internet service.
Intended to increase demand for Nebraska food products, LB 396, creates a Farm-to-School Program. The program will provide locally grown and minimally processed food to elementary and secondary school students. Additionally, it provides hands-on learning opportunities such as farm visits, school gardening, cooking demonstrations, and composting programs.
LB 644 requires counties, cities, school districts, and community colleges to hold a joint public hearing to pass a resolution or ordinance when the property tax asking grows over two percent. It requires notification by postcard to the affected taxpayers by the political subdivision seeking to increase their property tax request.
Finally, regarding telehealth, LB 400 changes telehealth laws in Nebraska. It allows patients to provide verbal consent during an initial telehealth visit, instead of previously having to first provide written consent before receiving treatment. With the new verbal consent standard, written consent is required within 10 days. Moreover, LB 487 prohibits medical insurance companies from charging higher rates for using telehealth services.
Feel free to contact me or my staff for assistance, information, or questions on issues.

In coordination with St Paul Methodist Church, United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas, and Bits & Pieces five bicycles are available to check out (just like a library book) and ride around town, to the park, or on the trail.
- To check out a bike, you must sign a waiver. General bike share program rules-
must show a drivers license at check out - 12-17 can rent bikes with a parent at check out. Parents take full responsibility and sign a waiver for their child.
- The bike is due back by the next Bits and Pieces business day. Plans are in the works to get a key dropbox. (Stay tuned.)
- The condition of the bike is checked at check out and when it is checked back in
when you check out a bike you are responsible for the bike. Any damage will result in a fee.
failure to return the bike by the due date will result in the suspension of your ability to check out bikes. - No holds/reservations on bikes will be allowed
- We do not provide helmets. You can bring your own helmet to use while riding the bike.
- Have fun!!!!
Funding for this project was provided in part by the United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas.💗 About 30 people attended the official ribbon cutting on April 12th and I was even the first person to check out a bike. It's easy and once you are registered you just add the next date and time to the notebook.

New Summer Hours
Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun
1:00 - 4:00 pm
The Bess Streeter Aldrich House started its new summer (extended hours) today.
We can also schedule a private tour on different days for groups of five or more.

This 1925 flapper-style wedding dress gets front room attention because it, like the Aldrich House, is about to celebrate it's 100th birthday. This dress belonged to Mim Custard's mother (Mildred Hoffman who married Ray) on August 26, 1925, in Chambers, Nebraska.
Our wedding exhibit goes through August 29. Are you responsible for planning a bridal shower? Why not consider hosting it at the Aldrich House which is already beautifully decorated. Check out some of the more than 20 dresses on display (as early as 1867)!
The Bess Streeter Aldrich House is pleased to host Dottie Wolverton who will give a presentation entitled “Tied to My Apron Strings” on Friday, June 4, at 1:30 p.m. Considered essential kitchen apparel, the look, and functionality of the apron has changed over the decades. Dottie will bring many of her extensive collections to show.

Designed as a garden event, the program may be moved inside or to the nearby learning center in case of inclement weather. Please pre-register with the director at aldrichfoundation@gmail.com. The cost is $5 and includes admission to the Wedding Exhibit at the Aldrich House.

Congratulations to Norah Green, a current UNL student from Elmwood, who was selected to be part of Jacht (pronounced like yacht), UNL’s student-run advertising and public relations agency through the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Jacht provides students with real-world experience that extends beyond classroom instruction by giving students opportunities to work in a real advertising agency setting.
Students use their skills and knowledge to work with real clients in areas of brand strategy, graphic design, photography and videography, social content creation and strategy, and public relations.
