Worms at the Library!

On July 15 Linda Behrns and her assistant Dana Stahl from Keep Cass County Beautiful came to the Elmwood Public Library and presented an outreach program about WORMS! Area children learned about how Red Wiggler worms help with composting and keeping our soil clean and healthy. In all, approximately 33 children attended the special session.

Library Director Anne Pope said, “Linda Behrns contacted me a few weeks ago, and we discussed what type of environmental subject kids in our community would be interested in. When she said, ‘Worms,’ I knew that was it. Kids in the Elmwood-Murdock area love getting their hands dirty!”

The children were allowed to conduct their own investigation about these squirmy little guys. “How many were in the cup? What color were they? Approximately how long?” The young scientists were extremely careful and meticulous. To wrap it up, they all got to eat a worm to celebrate! Oh, didn’t I mention that it was a gummy worm?

Thank you to Linda and Dana for their valuable contributions to our county!

Elmwood Farmers Market News
Sweet Corn is here and it is delicious!! Head over to the Farmers Market every Saturday and buy local.

We had some new vendors selling jewelry and homemade drawstring bags. They would be really cute around a bottle of wine or to custom wrap a gift.
The smiles on these ladies say it all. Saturday mornings are the perfect time to meet new people, relax, and share your talent with others.

Grocery Bags with a Mission

Linda Blunt brought her sleeping mats to share her mission with others. She is a lady of many talents. Not only do her kolaches bring people in droves but she runs the Elmwood Foodbank and also crochets for others. These sleeping mats she crochets using grocery store plastic bags. They are the size of a twin-size mattress and are donated to organizations that serve the "unhoused".

SIX HUNDRED grocery store bags are used to make these sleeping mats which are not only waterproof but provides cushion and insulation from the ground underneath. The yellow bags are from Super Saver and the white matt is made from HyVee bags.
Several people, including kids, tried them out on the ground. If you have extra bags you can talk to Linda at the Elmwood Foodbank on the 3rd Saturday of the month at the old Village Clerk office and she will be glad to tell you what she needs.
Better yet. If you would like to start crocheting one yourself she would be more than happy to help you get started.

We have an amazing collection of vendors with hair jewelry, candles, honey, tea, canned goods, flowers, soap, crafts, and more.
Produce is starting to explode and if you are looking for cucumbers, zucchini, squash, beans, beets, and potatoes then get there EARLY!!
Get there early before they run out. It's going to be a great day for the Farmers Market with flowers and amazing vendors.
Saturdays from now until October
There is still room for MORE VENDORS - No signup, no fee, no mandatory number of times to set up. Just bring your tables and join us!
Join our Elmwood Market Vendor group here for more details or contact Dawn via email

In coordination with St Paul Methodist Church, United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas, and Bits & Pieces five bicycles are available to check out (just like a library book) and ride around town, to the park, or on the trail.

- To check out a bike, you must sign a waiver. General bike share program rules-
must show a drivers license at check out - 12-17 can rent bikes with a parent at check out. Parents take full responsibility and sign a waiver for their child.
- The bike is due back by the next Bits and Pieces business day. Plans are in the works to get a key dropbox. (Stay tuned.)
- The condition of the bike is checked at check out and when it is checked back in
when you check out a bike you are responsible for the bike. Any damage will result in a fee.
failure to return the bike by the due date will result in the suspension of your ability to check out bikes. - No holds/reservations on bikes will be allowed
- We do not provide helmets. You can bring your own helmet to use while riding the bike.
- Have fun!!!!
Funding for this project was provided in part by the United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas.💗 About 30 people attended the official ribbon cutting on April 12th and I was even the first person to check out a bike. It's easy and once you are registered you just add the next date and time to the notebook.
