Village Office Cass County News
Good Neighbor Festival

Thank you to the Elmwood FBLA, businesses, and organizations that planned and held the first Good Neighbor Festival. If this year is any indication it will be bigger and better next year.

The Elmwood Community Center was represented and presented some upcoming plans for the Annex building next door. Stay tuned for more information coming soon.

The Elmwood Learning Center was the host for the event and people enjoyed free food, games, and were able to visit with merchants and community organizations.

The next phase of the Elmwood Learning Center was on display with the architectural drawings. It's going to be wonderful. Stay tuned for more information and how you can participate.

The EMMA announced the 2021 Good Neighbor Awards to three people who have all contributed for many years in helping make the Elmwood and Murdock communities a better place to live.

To say this award was a surprise to me is an understatement. Thank you for the nomination, whoever it was, and the support I have received from the community. I thoroughly enjoy everything about the Elmwood-Murdock community from playing the PIANO at church and helping manage and run the Elmwood Farmers Market.

I have the best job there welcoming all the visitors outside of Elmwood and telling them all about our community. The photo below is an example of what the Farmers Market is all about. Bobbie (with the overalls) is from Bellevue and has been following the Farmers Market Group for a couple of years. This was her first visit and as you can see she loved it so much she wanted a photo.
Afterward, they went to the Bess Streeter Aldrich House and Bits and Pieces. Big cities talk about the economic impact of events that come to town. The visitor spent close to $100 in Elmwood at small and local businesses.
Elmwood Farmers Market
From all the vendors at the Elmwood Farmers Market. Thank you! Becky's passion for gardening produced an "accidental" abundance of pumpkins this year and as a result she has an "in town" pumpkin patch.

The support from the 2020 Farmers Market encouraged Rebecca Kicak to start a soap business. You can still continue to purchase her soap and body care products on her Facebook page. Corner House Market Goods.

Thank you for supporting our passions. Linda's baked goods were SUPER popular this summer. Don't know if she takes special orders or not, might have to ask her when you see her at the Food Bank the third Saturday of the month.

Finally, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the Good Neighbor Award and for supporting the Farmers Market at the Bess Streeter Aldrich Park since 2017. When it started there was sometimes only one of us with a card table and a few muffins or jellies.
The support has helped launch my Tea & More business which you can also find on Facebook.

Thank you for all the conversations
Thank you for sharing your experiences with our products
Thank you for stopping by just to say "hello"
Thank you for all the Facebook shares, comments, and posting photos on social media
Thank you for encouraging others to shop local
....and thank you for your monetary support.
It has been a wonderful season and we look forward to seeing you next year!!

If you liked Downton Abbey, you may like this new series by Susie Murphy. A Matter of Class (Books 1-3 in one volume) follows Irish tenants, their upper-class English landlords, and two star-crossed lovers. With the odds against them, will Bridget and Cormac’s attachment blossom into something more?
For young readers, we have a series of 3 books about Narwahl and Jelly. Winner of the Will Eisner Award, these books look like comics but have a very fun (and often silly) story behind them. Very popular with 1-3rd graders!
The movie, “Jojo Rabbit” won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 2019 for its treatment of this youth fiction novel. Caging Skies follows Johannes, an avid member of the Hitler youth who idolizes the Nazi leader. To his horror, he discovers that his parents are hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. What will war’s end mean to him and Elsa?
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is one that we’ve heard a lot about and are excited to offer our patrons. The new Pack Horse Library service of the 1930s finds librarian Cussy Mary Carter battling treacherous roads and social prejudices while she distributes literature in some of the poorest and most remote areas of Kentucky.

ALVO Firehouse Bell
I received this inquiry and if you know any other information please send me an email at editor@elmwoodnebraska.com
I am researching an old bell, that used to sit in front of a barbershop in Alvo, NE. My understanding is that it had come from a firehouse in a nearby town.
So do you know anyone in your town that may remember such a bell having hung in your firehouse there? And what may have happened to it or how it came to be in Alvo? This would have been back in the 1960s.
Thank you for your attention to this.

Holiday Craft Fair

In coordination with St Paul Methodist Church, United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas, and Bits & Pieces five bicycles are available to check out (just like a library book) and ride around town, to the park, or on the trail.

- To check out a bike, you must sign a waiver. General bike share program rules-
must show a drivers license at check out - 12-17 can rent bikes with a parent at check out. Parents take full responsibility and sign a waiver for their child.
- The bike is due back by the next Bits and Pieces business day. Plans are in the works to get a key dropbox. (Stay tuned.)
- The condition of the bike is checked at check out and when it is checked back in
when you check out a bike you are responsible for the bike. Any damage will result in a fee.
failure to return the bike by the due date will result in the suspension of your ability to check out bikes. - No holds/reservations on bikes will be allowed
- We do not provide helmets. You can bring your own helmet to use while riding the bike.
- Have fun!!!!
Funding for this project was provided in part by the United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas.💗 About 30 people attended the official ribbon cutting on April 12th and I was even the first person to check out a bike. It's easy and once you are registered you just add the next date and time to the notebook.
