Village Office Cass County News
I received the following unsolicited story about Jeff Clymer and how through just being small town friendly helped make an anniversary even more special.

Jeff is the epitome of what small town family hospitality and others helping each other out is all about. He is a busy man I could tell right off the bat, yet he was looking out for his neighbors and trying to find ways to help even while he was working. If it wasn’t for him taking the extra step to stop and talk with us, my boy would have never been able to help Chuck and Jan. I see that you just had some good neighbor awards but he deserves an honorable mention.

The story is we were in the park in Elmwood doing our thing (metal detecting) and Jeff, who was mowing, comes over to us.
Making some small talk and inquiring about our hobby and abilities. Meantime he gets a few calls on his phone. We continue to talk and find out we have a few people in common. He tells us this man Chuck had lost his wedding ring awhile ago and they have searched and searched for it using the tools they had available. Jan had even combed the ground with her fingers hoping to find it.

Jeff realized we weren’t from Elmwood but Bennet and he wondered if we would come back and maybe help look. When he said it’s there 67th tomorrow I didn’t hesitate but I asked where Chuck and Jan lived and he pointed across the street a block. I said let’s go now, he rode his mower over there, introduced us and then continued to do his work. Jan begun to tell us the story how Chuck lost his ring, she found it the first time but the next day they realized it was lost again.
We started to do a systematic detect of the yard, Jan was a blast, she would perk up anytime we got a hit in the yard and dug something, she would laugh sometimes at what we found and sometimes in amazement that was in the yard. I kept asking her questions as to Chucks activity that day as I searched areas he would maybe have gone.
While I was between the bird feeder and tree swing my boy said dad I found the ring, it was in the corner between the 4x4 fence post and the fence 1/2” under the dirt: Jan said are you kidding me. Nelson holding it up said here you go.

Tears of joy thanked my son , something he won’t fully understand for some time but later on the way home he said that was the best find even though it’s not in his collection. He has an impressive collection for only being 11 years old.
As we were leaving the house some people were putting up some happy anniversary signs in the yard. What a great town celebration for them.
When Jan gave Chuck the ring he was delighted as he put it on his finger then immediately took it off and gave it to her and said you better keep track of it for me so I don’t lose it. They are going to get it resized.
I don’t know if Jeff told you that we are looking for more challenges. If anyone has lost something, maybe rumor of something being lost on their place or would like to give us permission to metal detect their place we would like to talk. 402-580-6933 thx Rob Lyman

If you liked Downton Abbey, you may like this new series by Susie Murphy. A Matter of Class (Books 1-3 in one volume) follows Irish tenants, their upper-class English landlords, and two star-crossed lovers. With the odds against them, will Bridget and Cormac’s attachment blossom into something more?
For young readers, we have a series of 3 books about Narwahl and Jelly. Winner of the Will Eisner Award, these books look like comics but have a very fun (and often silly) story behind them. Very popular with 1-3rd graders!
The movie, “Jojo Rabbit” won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 2019 for its treatment of this youth fiction novel. Caging Skies follows Johannes, an avid member of the Hitler youth who idolizes the Nazi leader. To his horror, he discovers that his parents are hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. What will war’s end mean to him and Elsa?
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is one that we’ve heard a lot about and are excited to offer our patrons. The new Pack Horse Library service of the 1930s finds librarian Cussy Mary Carter battling treacherous roads and social prejudices while she distributes literature in some of the poorest and most remote areas of Kentucky.

- The bike is due back by the next Bits and Pieces business day. Plans are in the works to get a key dropbox. (Stay tuned.)
- The condition of the bike is checked at check out and when it is checked back in
when you check out a bike you are responsible for the bike. Any damage will result in a fee.
failure to return the bike by the due date will result in the suspension of your ability to check out bikes. - No holds/reservations on bikes will be allowed
- We do not provide helmets. You can bring your own helmet to use while riding the bike.
- Have fun!!!!
Funding for this project was provided in part by the United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas.💗 About 30 people attended the official ribbon cutting on April 12th and I was even the first person to check out a bike. It's easy and once you are registered you just add the next date and time to the notebook.
