Have you noticed the new sculptures along Highway 1 south of Elmwood?  Rumor has it that the FBLA is behind these.  I'll have to check into that and get the scoop.  But for now, pay attention as you drive out of town.

4-Club Makes Scarves

The Tomorrow’s Producers 4-H Club met on Sunday at the Extension Office in Weeping Water.  There were 7 members & 7 adults that participated. They made head scarves to donate to Inner Beauty Salon at the Methodist Cancer Hospital in Omaha. Everyone brought different material and helped by ironing, cutting, sewing, folding & tagging. In the end we made 110 scarves to donate! The reason we did this project is because there are groups or people that knit & crochet hats, but nothing cool for patients to wear during the summer. The scarves will be given free of charge to adults and teens. If it goes over well, we will continue to do this project in the future….so if anyone has scraps of cotton material at least 21” x 21” square or bigger and would like to donate to this club project contact Sue Platt, Karen Bogatz or Kim Griffin.

Kyle Bogatz, Charlotte & Valerie Miller, Matt & Kim Griffin were able to deliver the scarves to Lori Fuchs who runs the Inner Beauty Salon at the hospital on Tuesday morning.

Participating in the workshop were Kyle & Karen Bogatz, Charlotte & Kristi Miller, Diane, Lindsey, Maddie & Morgan Mills, Susie & Shenia Stamps, Sue Platt, Joyce Kupke, Kim & Matt Griffin.

Case tractors to highlight annual July show

WAVERLY – Plans are being finalized and grounds are being spruced up for this year’s 36th Annual Camp Creek Antique Machinery and Threshing Show set for July 21 and 22, 2012 near Waverly.            The Case line of tractors is being featured this year along with Nelson Bros. gas engines. This 2012 feature tractor is owned by Clarence and Kathy Scholl of Plattsmouth. The restored 1950 tractor was produced for the CORPS of Engineers, U.S. Army and will be on display throughout the weekend. Case tractors will join rows and rows of other restored tractors on display for all to enjoy.
Threshing machines will be working throughout the weekend harvesting wheat that the club grows, cuts and binds a few days before the show. Other demonstrations include a sawmill, steam crane, plowing and fieldwork, corn shelling, baker fan, flourmill and proney brake.
A craft building will be open that will include demonstrations of butter making, and pottery and an old-fashioned popcorn popper. Across from the craft building, the print shop will be open where a person can stop and watch printing machines as they make up date cards for next year’s show.
Buildings along Main Street include a country store, with plenty of items for sale, a drug store, summer kitchen, one room schoolhouse, and a country church. Church services will be held Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Post cards will be for sale in the Post Office that people can have stamped with a “Camp Creek Threshers” cancellation stamp.

For the children, the Waverly FFA will bring in animals for children to pet and feed, the kids’ playground includes new equipment, and once again, children will be invited to dive through a straw pile looking for money. The Children’s Tractor Pedal Pull is scheduled for Sunday morning.

The Prairie Blacksmiths will demonstrate the art of blacksmithing, the Lincoln Railroaders will have a display in the Waverly Depot, and the Camp Creek Railroaders will be running their scaled trains that weekend.   And if you are looking for a missing part, an old tractor manual, or a dish that reminds you of what your mother had, there is a good chance that you will be able to find it in the flea market. And at 2 p.m. both days, a Parade of Power will go through the showgrounds. That’s when you’ll get to see those old tractors actually run. An antique tractor pull is set for both days.  The event opens at dawn both days with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and food and water will be for sale throughout the day.   Camping is available, security will be provided, parking is free, and admission remains at $7 per day. Trams will run through the showgrounds both days of the show. Handicapped parking will be available and rides will be given back and forth to vehicles.  The showgrounds are located at 17200 Bluff Road, two miles east of the Waverly Intermediate School and Rosehill Cemetery. Watch for the signs.

For more information contact the Threshers at 402.786.3003 or Rich Hartz, president, 402.421.6442. For camping reservations contact Larry and Gayla Carr at 402.435.0030. RADON DETECTORS AVAILABLE FOR FREE!

What is Radon?  Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas.

You can't see radon. And you can't smell it or taste it. But it may be a problem in your home.

Radon is estimated to cause many thousands of deaths each year. That's because when you breathe air containing radon, you can get lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer is especially high.

Radon can be found all over the U.S.

Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon can be found all over the U.S. It can get into any type of building — homes, offices, and schools — and result in a high indoor radon level. But you and your family are most likely to get your greatest exposure at home, where you spend most of your time.

You should test for radon.

Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon. EPA also recommends testing in schools.

Testing is inexpensive and easy — it should only take a few minutes of your time. Millions of Americans have already tested their homes for radon.

Radon Home Test Kits are now available for free at the Elmwood Village Office.  They are provided by the Sarpy/Cass County Health Department.  Test your home and find out if you have a problem.

How to Test Your Home

You can't see radon, but it's not hard to find out if you have a radon problem in your home. All you need to do is test for radon. Testing is easy and should only take a few minutes of your time.

The amount of radon in the air is measured in "picocuries per liter of air," or "pCi/L." There are many kinds of low-cost "do-it-yourself" radon test kits you can get through the mail and in some hardware stores and other retail outlets. If you prefer, or if you are buying or selling a home, you can hire a qualified tester to do the testing for you. You should first contact your state radon office about obtaining a list of qualified testers. You can also contact a private radon proficiency program for lists of privately certified radon professionals serving your area. For links and information, visit www.epa.gov/radon/radontest.html.

Radon reduction systems work and they are not too costly. Some radon reduction systems can reduce radon levels in your home by up to 99%. Even very high levels can be reduced to acceptable levels.

How Does Radon Get Into Your Home?

Any home may have a radon problem

Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.

Radon from soil gas is the main cause of radon problems. Sometimes radon enters the home through well water. In a small number of homes, the building materials can give off radon, too. However, building materials rarely cause radon problems by themselves.

Nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated radon levels. Elevated levels of radon gas have been found in homes in your state. Contact your state radon office for general information about radon in your area. While radon problems may be more common in some areas, any home may have a problem. The only way to know about your home is to test.

Radon Home Test Kits are now available for free at the Elmwood Village Office.  They are provided by the Sarpy/Cass County Health Department.  Test your home and find out if you have a problem.
