EDITOR VACATION
From September 5th -14th I will be out of town on vacation.
If you would like something added to the newsletters for the next two weeks please email them to me at editor@elmwoodnebraska.com by this Friday and I will schedule the weekly news in advance.
I didn't realize until today I have not missed a weekly edition in over four years and it will seem strange to do so now. There may be an issue missing if I do not receive updates.

ALVO Firehouse Bell
I received this inquiry and if you know any other information please send me an email at editor@elmwoodnebraska.com
I am researching an old bell, that used to sit in front of a barbershop in Alvo, NE. My understanding is that it had come from a firehouse in a nearby town.
So do you know anyone in your town that may remember such a bell having hung in your firehouse there? And what may have happened to it or how it came to be in Alvo? This would have been back in the 1960s.
Thank you for your attention to this.

- The condition of the bike is checked at check out and when it is checked back in
when you check out a bike you are responsible for the bike. Any damage will result in a fee.
failure to return the bike by the due date will result in the suspension of your ability to check out bikes. - No holds/reservations on bikes will be allowed
- We do not provide helmets. You can bring your own helmet to use while riding the bike.
- Have fun!!!!
Funding for this project was provided in part by the United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas.đź’— About 30 people attended the official ribbon cutting on April 12th and I was even the first person to check out a bike. Village Board Meeting
Board meetings are open to the public and are held every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month.
The meetings are held at the new Village Board office located at the Learning Center on the south side of town.
Official agendas are posted the day before at the Post Office, Gas Station, and Village Office. Prior to the posting of the agenda, meeting items can be added to the meeting. At the end of each meeting is a Public Comment Section. Attendees have three minutes to speak about anything at this time. Further discussion on the topic can then be added to the next board meeting.
The agenda is posted at the Elmwood C-Store, the post office, and the Village office.
Minutes can be viewed at the Village office or can be found online.
Wouldn't it be amazing if the board meetings were FULL every time? This is your opportunity to be involved, be "in the know" and learn how to influence how your community grows, how improvements can be made, and how you can participate in the steps needed to MAKE IT HAPPEN.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Piano Duo: Music by Women Concert Celebrates Composers
WAYNE, Neb. (Aug. 30, 2021) – Musical compositions for two pianos are rare. Two-piano works by female composers are even more uncommon. The Wayne State College concert Piano Duo: Music by Women pays tribute to gifted female composers on Monday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Ley Theatre. Featured pianists include Dr. Angela Miller-Niles, professor of piano and department chair, and Shelly Armstrong, WSC staff accompanist.
The concert is free and open to the public and will also be live-streamed. To view the live stream, go to www.wsc.edu/watch-live. The program is accessible by selecting the event from the Music Events list at www.wsc.edu/music.
“Compositions for two pianos have always sparked my interest,” explains Dr. Miller-Niles. “Through research, I uncovered masterful compositions by women which simply haven’t been heard enough. This concert brings some of these little-known gems to light.”
Repertoire includes Fantasia on Waltzing Matilda by Miriam Hyde (Australian, 1913-2015), Danza a media noche by Dana Suesse (American, 1911-1987), and Piano Concerto no. 1 by Zara Levina (Soviet/Jewish, 1906-1976). Hyde’s composition is an exuberant production colored by the well-known tune Waltzing Matilda. Suesse is often called the female George Gershwin. Translated as “dance at midnight,” her work is a rumba for two pianos, with four hands. The Levina selection is a kaleidoscopic journey of powerful, sweeping chords; supple, expressive runs; and sharp, lyrical rhythms.
For more information, contact the WSC Department of Music at (402) 375-7359.
Wayne State College, a leading, public four-year college in northeast Nebraska, is a proud member of the Nebraska State College System.
